Our story begins with a miniature schnauzer named Fritz, who was with us for 14 years. Unfortunately we lost Fritz in June. When he passed, he left a huge hole in our lives. We have been pet lovers for many years and have often visited the Woodlands to watch greyhound races. We have always been intrigued by greyhounds and had often thought about adopting one. However, Fritz was an only child and after so many years of being the "only" one, it was clear that we should not introduce another dog into his domain.
When it came time to fill the void, we both immediately thought of adopting a greyhound. After contacting the Pups Without Partners program at the Woodlands, we found out what a great value and perfect solution it was for us. With our schedules and lifestyle, we did not want to go through the "puppy" stage at this time, so a retired racer, who had already been trained and was used to scheduled activities worked out perfectly for us. After doing our homework and taking the adoption class,

it was time to meet the dogs. They all seemed wonderful. We were drawn to two dogs after our first visit. When we came back for our second visit, it was all too clear who we would add to our family because she picked us. Ay's Pro had ended her racing career in early July and had just entered the Pups Without Program when we came along. Something clicked immediately and that was confirmed when we came back for our second visit and got to play with the two-year-old greyhound in the adoption pen. However, we were not endeared with calling this playful female "Pro", so we changed it to "Flo" - a name to which she quickly became accustomed to being called.
It didn't take Flo to get used the "retired" way of life. As you can see in the photos, she will sleep anywhere. She also loves to walk and goes on long walks several times a week. She has been a great companion to us, and the best part is that she is so different than Fritz that there have never been any comparisons between the two. The only commonality between the two is that they have brought great joy to our lives.
If you have a good home to give to a dog, please consider adopting a greyhound. You will be glad you did, and then you can tell us your Happy Tale.
